This album is an invitation to discover the works of composers from northern Europe.

I discovered Estonian music a few years ago during a stay in St Petersburg, Russia, where I came across Eduard Tubin piano works. I was instantly captivated by this music and did some research which led me to other exceptionally talented composers like Mart Saar and Heino Eller, both being almost absolutely unknown outside of Estonia. What struck me about Eller's music is that, beyond the connection we can make with Russian music and more specifically with a composer like Skryabin there are unique similarities in his works with the music of Scandinavian composers.

Grieg, Sibelius and Eller are usually seen as national composers, and they did participate in the development of the national identities of Norway, Finland and Estonia. However, focusing so much on the national aspect of their music obscures the reality of the connections between these different countries : the three composers were profoundly inspired by the light and landscapes of northern Europe, and their works are deeply rooted in a common culture of legends, poetry and folk music of the north. This is what this album is about : immerse yourself in this music, and I hope you will enter this wonderful aesthetic world and understand this 'Nordic spirit' that goes across the borders, from Norway to the Baltic countries...
